Questions and answers
The most important questions and answers about tattoo removal with the pico laser.
How does laser tattoo removal work?
The laser uses short, intense pulses of light that target and break up the tattoo's colour pigments. Your immune system then slowly carries the broken-down pigments away through the lymphatic system, so the tattoo fades bit by bit.
Is laser removal painful?
Yes, many people find the process painful, similar to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against the skin. How much it hurts depends on the body area, your personal sensitivity to pain and the size of the tattoo.
How many sessions are needed for complete removal?
The number of sessions depends on several factors, including the size, colours, depth and age of the tattoo, as well as your skin type. Usually, though, you need between 5 and 12 sessions, sometimes more. It depends on how deeply the tattoo was inked, or whether it was tattooed several times.
Can all colours be removed?
Not all colours can be removed equally well. Black and dark colours are the easiest to remove, because they absorb laser light best. Light colours such as yellow and orange are often harder to treat.
Are there any side effects?
Possible side effects include redness, swelling, blistering and sometimes mild pain afterwards. Some people may also experience hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, where the skin becomes lighter or darker, if the intervals between sessions are too short.
How much does tattoo removal cost?
The cost depends on the size of the tattoo and the number of sessions needed. Asingle session costs depending on size: small black tattoos from CHF 50, 5 x 5 cm CHF 200, 10 x 10 cm CHF 350, 15 x 15 cm CHF 550. Coloured tattoos cost a little more
How long does the skin need to heal between sessions?
We recommend waiting at least 6 to 20 weeks between sessions. This gives your skin time to recover and your body time to clear away the pigments.
Will tattoo removal leave scars?
Modern laser technology greatly reduces the risk of scarring. However, there is some risk if the skin is not cared for properly or if it is sensitive. That is why aftercare and looking after your skin are important. The PicoSure laser is also used specifically to treat scars, as it smooths the skin.
Can I work or do sport straight after a session?
You can usually carry on with your daily routine. However, for a few days we recommend avoiding intense physical activity, direct sunlight and saunas to protect your skin.
Are there alternatives to laser removal?
Yes, there are other methods, such as surgical removal or dermabrasion. However, these methods are often more invasive and can leave scars. The laser is currently the safest and most effective method.
Do you work in line with the V-NISSG?
Yes, absolutely. We work strictly in line with the V-NISSG (the Swiss ordinance to the Federal Act on Protection against Hazards from Non-Ionising Radiation and Sound). Since 1 June 2024, only people with a federal certificate of competence may carry out laser tattoo removal in Switzerland. We hold this certificate, so you can rely on the highest standards of safety and hygiene.
How can I recognise a reputable provider?
In Switzerland, a reputable provider must be able to show their V-NISSG certificate of competence. You should also be offered a free, detailed consultation where the risks are discussed openly. Be careful with promises like "completely gone in 1 session". Physically, that is hardly possible. The provider should also use modern laser technology (such as PicoSure), not outdated equipment.
Is there an age limit for treatment?
Yes. We generally treat people aged 18 and over. For young people under 18, we require written consent from their parents or legal guardians. One parent must also attend the first consultation so that all medical and legal questions can be discussed.
Is there affordable PicoSure tattoo removal near Zurich?
Yes, in Kreuzlingen. Many clients from Zurich make the short trip because treatment here costs much less than the usual Zurich prices (5 x 5 cm: CHF 200 per session).
If you have any more questions or need more detailed information, it is a good idea to consult a specialist or dermatologist.
