Why fading before a cover-up matters
Many people think you can simply tattoo over an old tattoo. In practice, though, this often leads to messy results, because old colours and outlines remain visible. Targeted fading with the PicoSure laser reduces the existing tattoo enough to give your tattoo artist creative freedom again. The PicoSure laser is the most advanced laser for tattoo fading and removal. It works with extremely short pulses of light (picoseconds) that shatter the ink pigments into tiny particles – fast, gentle and effective.

How many treatments will you need?
For cover-up preparation alone, one to three sessions with the PicoSure laser are usually enough. Depending on the intensity and depth of the colours, an extra session may occasionally make sense.
💡 After each session, your skin should be given 6–8 weeks to recover before you plan the new tattoo. Your tattoo artist can then judge when the right time for the new design has come.
How fading works
- Consultation: We look at your tattoo and discuss what you want from the cover-up.
- Laser treatment: The PicoSure laser precisely targets the ink pigments – without damaging the surrounding tissue.
- Healing phase: Your skin needs 6–8 weeks of rest while your body clears away the broken-down pigments.
- Check-up: Together we check whether the tattoo is light enough or whether another treatment makes sense.
